How the Psychotherapy Voucher program works: 5 easy steps

  1. Uniquely diverse clients from historically marginalized communities unable to access therapy because of financial barriers may apply for psychotherapy vouchers with current, A Therapist Like Me Psychotherapy Voucher members. A Therapist Like Me does not endorse any Psychotherapy Voucher members. Before you apply for a voucher, you must FIRST choose a therapist who has or can become an A Therapist Like Me Psychotherapy Voucher member within the application cycle for which you apply. A new round of uniquely diverse therapists from historically marginalized communities will be added before the application process opens so check back. All services for for clients and therapists in North Carolina.

  2. After consulting with the A Therapist Like Me Psychotherapy Voucher member of your choice and agreeing to work together if approved, you may indicate how many vouchers you would like to apply for (you may apply for up to 16 vouchers, and if your application is approved, must be used before the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2023). Applicants may also indicate the cost of each voucher (you may apply for $5-100 per voucher). For example, after consulting with the therapist I want to work with and learning the therapist is an A Therapist Like Me Psychotherapy Voucher member, I figure out that I can pay $20 per session and want a total of 4 sessions. I also want to work with an ATLM Psychotherapy Voucher member who charges $100/session. I would then apply for 4, $80 vouchers.

    Please keep in mind that if you are approved for the program, you may or may not receive the cost and/or amount of vouchers for which you applied.

  3. Psychotherapy voucher applications are reviewed by a review team consisting of 3 (three), uniquely diverse, licensed, trained, anonymous, volunteer, therapists in the Asheville community.

  4. Clients who are eligible and ineligible for vouchers will be emailed with the review team’s decision by by 7pm, two weeks after the application. Decisions for those who are not eligible this application round will be given additional, community resources and mental health options.

    If you would prefer a phone call with your decision instead, please state that in your application.

  5. If you are approved, you will be emailed a voucher with the approved cost of each voucher and the amount of vouchers granted. You then can choose to forward the voucher to your therapist or bring it to your first session.

    Vouchers not used by June 30, 2023 will be recycled back into the program. Vouchers not claimed by the therapist will be recycled back into the program.
